haha I know, the one button..."mice?" drive me crazy...but I mostly use keyboard shortcuts now. Yeah I think the PC's became popular because they mostly do everything for you, but a lot of people don't realize how many bugs Windows has now. I don't know too much about Linux...I know that you basically setup everything the way you want to in it, but I'm still a fan of the macintosh.
Hi,
As I understand it, Linux is a very stable system, and has open code source, which means that you can change the way it works to suit yourself. But that alone tells you that it is
NOT for the beginner. Linux is an offshoot of Unix system which is what is used in the business world main frame computers. My son-in-law uses only these two systems.
I made a big mistake a couple of years back by buying a computer with a Modified Linux system on it which acted very much like Windows, and was at that time called "Lindows", But because of lawsuits by "Windows" has now renamed their system to "Linspire". You can buy a computer with "Linspire" on it as the operating system at a greatly reduced price compared to one with Windows on it.
I have to note that although the system was stable,
their version of Linux was locked into their company,
(unlike the true Linux system) so that you could only get programs through them. That was not all that bad, since they advertised that once you subscribed to their service one time, that you could download all the programs that you wanted, and that you would have those programs for life.
But in practice, they gave no support by their tech service, only sending you around in circles. At least they did for me, never giving me an answer, each time putting the blame on me for it not working without telling me how to fix it. And many of their newsletters they sent to me had many untruths in them.
And I found that every time that I upgraded (3 times to a higher version) the operating system, that I had to totally download every one of the programs again
(their claim that you didn't have to was a lie.) I would spend days re-downloading all those programs each time, even though I followed all their instructions. and they refused to allow re-downloads of some of the programs (they said I could have those programs for life once I downloaded them, (I had it in writing) because I had paid their subscription,) they then refused to allow the re-downloads without paying them a large sum of money for each program. And I would still run into the same problems again the next time I upgraded. I finally junked the "Linspire" (Lindows) system, taking it completely off of the computer and installing Windows instead. At least with windows when I bought a program it was mine to use forever.
Note that I spoke above about the "Linspire" version of Linux, and not Linux system itself. If you want to try the Linux system, then go to "Red Hat" or one of the other Main Linux systems. All of which can be downloaded free, or you can buy a boxed version along with an operating manual for a nominal cost. And you can download any number of major programs for it free off of the internet, which are then yours for life, or even for you to modify how they work, if you desire. Those programs are equal to or better than any program for Windows. But as I said, Linux is NOT for the beginner.
Both Windows and Macintosh are plug in and use systems, Linux and Unix are not.
I never tried the Macintosh, but I never heard of anyone complaining about their use of it either. My understanding is that it is a very much more stable Operating system, And while it does not have as many programs available for it, My understanding is that what they do have are very good.
I have noted in the news within the last week, news stories that Google may be about to bring out a computer operating system which will tie it's search engine to the operating system, and if so would be able to have computers without the "Windows" operating system. I found that interesting because of the prophecy which says that when Bill Gates falls it will be the beginning of the end. If Google brings out a good operating system, then nobody will want to keep Windows, Which tries to keep you a slave to Bill Gates, and Bill Gates falls. Interesting, we need to keep on watching this to see where, and if, it goes.
It is also interesting how Ray's prophecy where his computer kept on crashing with the XP system, led to this discussion about computer systems.
Nothing wrong with that, just that I found it interesting.
